Public holiday

A public holiday is a day during which an employer cannot unreasonably require an employee to work. If an employee is covered by a modern award or enterprise agreement, they are generally also to penalty rates if they work a public holiday. Commonwealth public holidays are New Year's Day, Australia Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Other public holidays, such as Queen's Birthday and Labour Day, are set by the relevant State and Territory government.
