Stand down

Stand down is where an employer directs an employee to not attend work because the employee cannot be usefully employed due to of a stoppage of work for a cause that the employer is not reasonably responsible for. Eg a strike or machinery breakdown. An employer is not required to pay an employee during a shutdown, but the employee can take accrued but untaken annual leave.
